Help Save Sequalitchew Creek

By Kirk Kirkland

Whenever I ride my bike through DuPont and Northwest Landing, I appreciate the intentional design. This town features wide bike lanes, active walking trails, and safe paths. Children can walk downtown or ride their bikes safely to the public library.

These livable features now face an immediate threat.

The CalPortland gravel operation wants to expand its mining below the groundwater level. This deep extraction will drain the Vashon Aquifer. The current plan relies on mechanical pumps to fake the water flow, but those pumps will turn off after 14 years.

Once the pumping stops, the Vashon Aquifer will drop, Sequalitchew Creek’s peak flows will plunge by 83 percent, and our neighborhood wetlands will turn into mudholes. The surrounding soils will dry out, making it difficult to grow street trees or keep our local forests resilient.

Join the Fight for an Alternate Future

It does not have to be this way.

You can help prevent this destruction. The Clover Creek Restoration Alliance stepped in to file a formal court appeal to stop the de-watering. We are asking the judge to enforce a real, permanent restoration plan. We envision an alternate future for the mine—one filled with trails, pocket parks, bike lanes, and benches surrounding healthy wetlands.

Last week, our neighborhood coalition met with an environmental attorney. He reviewed our baseline research and agreed to help us get to court. The legal case against the mining company is clear: their deferred restoration plan violates state law because it is temporary. The streams and wetlands will dry up the moment the company walks away and turns the pumps off.  Forever.

Our obstacle is not the strength of our legal case. Our obstacle is funding the court appeal.

Put a Value on Your Neighborhood

Finding a specialized attorney to fight a multi-billion-dollar mining company pro bono is impossible. Securing representation for the critical early court appearances requires a lean, targeted budget, and an Attorney that believes in our cause.

This is where your investment makes a direct impact.

We need you to stop by the trailhead today. Walk the path, stop by Edmond Marsh, and listen to the birds. Then, put a value on it.

Once you arrive at a decision, please use the contribution options below to fund this defense.

Four of your neighbors decided they wanted to make a difference, and they refused to stand by silently. We are doing everything possible to ensure DuPont’s next neighborhood can grow a green canopy of trees, keep its streams flowing, and protect the wild places we love.

Thank you for standing with us.
