Ryan Mello is running for Pierce County Executive stepping up from being chair of the County Council. Other councilmembers are leaving empty seats that could cause a change in the environmental leadership on the council. Your vote in the August 6 primary election can make a big difference in the future of our county.

For the last two years, the Pierce County Council has made remarkable progress on environmental issues. In this election, three seats on the council are potentially changing. Marty Campbell is running for County Assessor-Treasurer, and will be leaving the council if he wins. Ryan Mello is running for County Executive, and Jani Hitchen is running for re-election in District 6. Altogether, a change in orientation could occur if the Democratic members do not retain their four-seat majority.
Finding these seats on the County election ballot requires some extra attention. The ballot has names on both sides with a primary election for Governor, Lands Commissioner, Congress, County Sheriff, judges, and state legislators. It’s not easy to find the Pierce County Council candidates, as there are so many unknown names as you scroll through the ballot.
We want to help you choose people who favor environmental causes in some of these important races for positions in both county and state government. Look over the list of people we’ve interviewed at the end of this article. Then, find your ballot, fill it out and put it in the mail. Time is running out. Your vote will make a big difference in how Pierce County is shaped over the next four years. Here’s our full list of endorsed candidates for 2024:
