Dave Upthegrove wins Statewide Automatic Recount!
As of September 4th, Dave Upthegrove has officially been declared the 2nd-place finisher in the race for WA Commissioner of Public Lands. After finishing 51 votes ahead of Republican Sue Kuehl Pederson when the first count was certified, the razor-thin margin triggered a statewide automatic hand recount. The recount produced 4 net additional votes for Upthegrove and 6 net additional votes for Pederson. The overall result was a 49-vote margin in favor of Upthegrove. He now advances to the November general election to face 1st-place finisher Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler. Many volunteers worked hard to help cure ballots with missing or mismatched signatures before certification, which likely made a difference in the outcome. Don’t let anyone tell you that your vote doesn’t count–it most certainly did in this race!
Upthegrove is the only leading candidate not accepting donations from the forest products industry or their corporate executives and lobbyists. He is running a grassroots campaign, and most of his contributions come from folks like you. Unfortunately, this election requires your donation more than your vote. It has become a money race, where Dave’s opposition has more checks from the forest products industry than from people like us who want sustainable forests that are helpful in addressing climate change.
